Whenever I take pictures of families, it’s usually the mom who wants the photos. She’s the one who will email to set up the date, she’ll spend quite some time coordinating everyone’s outfits for the day, and more than likely she’ll be the calm, positive voice throughout the session, fending off any naysayers who might be a little camera shy. And while the mom in the family photos below was the one to initiate this session, it was her daughter who asked for a photo of just the two of them that she could take with her to college. And it was both her children who gently nudged her to have a portrait taken of just her because they think she’s beautiful. It reminded me that these pictures I’m taking — pictures that hundreds of photographers take every day — they matter. They represent home when you’re miles away, they’re visual documentation of your memories and they say that in this moment, you’re beautiful and loved exactly how you are.

It isn’t the scenery, the props or the wardrobe that make a great photo session. They help, but the real secret to a great photo session, as Laura and Dave will show you below, is simply to laugh. When you laugh, you relax, you forget just a little about the camera and you enjoy the moment. Laura and Dave mastered this during our walk around Solomons Island. It’s hard not to look at these images and smile!

A few days before the wedding, Mary posted a message on facebook to her guests that in a nutshell said, “we’re so excited you’re coming, please bring an umbrella.” She wasn’t about to let a little rain, or a lot as it turned out, change her wedding day plans. So on a very rainy day at the end of April, she and Scott huddled closely under an umbrella (a clear one I might note that was excellent planning on her part for photographs!) as they said their vows. I love that these two didn’t let Mother Nature ruin their day. And I can’t help but think that every time it rains, they’ll be reminded of the day they became husband and wife.
