I’ve been taking this beautiful family’s photographs for so many years now that I’ve actually lost count of the number of times they’ve been behind my lens!

Over the years, we’ve made some fun memories including the time one of the boys forgot his shoes and another time when we met at the Capitol building but I forgot my cell phone. There were only a couple hundred other people there making it difficult to find them! I am so appreciative that they come back every year and allow me to share in their adventures!

A few times a year, I have the pleasure of photographing a small wedding ceremony. And I love these intimate events just as much as I love a big party!

Laura and Kyle chose to get married on the water surrounded by a little more than 20 of their closest friends and family. A few weeks later they would celebrate in a slightly bigger way, but on this day the focus was simply on the act of becoming man and wife. I found their wedding celebration to be both elegant and incredibly romantic!

The following talented vendors contributed to this beautiful wedding: Swant Point Yacht & Country Club, wedding day venue and catering; Rev. Joe Orlando of Creative Weddings of Southern Maryland, officiant; Jill Christine Design & Photography, photographer; Marcy’s Towne Florist, flowers; and Grauls Market in Baltimore, cake.

The dictionary definition of the word cousin is pretty straightforward — “the son or daughter of an uncle or aunt.” I think a better definition would include something along the lines of the following: an immediate friend within your own family, someone to share adventures with, someone who understands where you came from and someone who may disagree with you and even give you a hard time now and again, but who will love you no matter what.

I know these five cousins from last week’s photo session will find the same to be true throughout their childhood. And now, here are a few of my favorites from our adventure of a photo shoot!

They say that rain on your wedding day is good luck, but to be honest, whenever I hear rain in the forecast for one of my couples, my heart breaks just a little bit. I know at the end of the day, they’ll be married and we’ll have captured beautiful moments — some of which wouldn’t be possible without the weather, like when the bride’s dress billows in the wind! But I also know that it’s not what they envisioned for their day and sometimes letting go of that idea can be hard.

So when Hurricane Joaquin threatened Beth and Burt’s wedding, I packed my umbrellas (all 12 of them) and waited to see how the weather would unfold. The weather, however, never really seemed to be an issue for Beth and Burt. And I think this speaks volumes to the kind of people they are and their commitment to one another. It didn’t matter what was going on outside. What mattered was that they were taking a step to formally begin their lives together and from this day forward, they would face any challenges, or hurricanes, as the case may be, hand in hand!

The season for family portraits has arrived! And that’s why I thought it would be a good time to revisit a couple articles I wrote earlier in the year relevant to these types of sessions.

The first article, Planning for a Successful Photo Session, covers the basics of your session. It talks about everything from what to wear, when to plan your photo session. where to hold it and what to bring. If your family portrait happens to include a few toddlers, the article, The Perfect Toddler Photograph will help you manage your expectations and also serve as a reminder that it’s almost always going better than you think! And lastly, be sure to read Including Pets in Your Family Photos if you’re bringing along any furry friends to photograph.

One last tip for your fall portrait session: arrive early. This will give your children and/pets a chance to get acclimated to the area and explore before posing for the camera!
